Access is what decides the visit
Most of a chimney lives on the roof, so roof access decides how much can be assessed in one trip. A single-story home with a walkable pitch is straightforward. A steep or tile roof, a second story, or a chimney set back behind other roof planes may need different equipment, worth mentioning when you book so the right kit arrives the first time.
Inside, the crew needs to reach the firebox and, where the flue is in question, run a camera up it. Clearing the hearth and moving anything fragile nearby is the whole of the preparation.
Do not light a fire beforehand
A flue needs to be cold to be inspected or swept, so leave the fireplace unused for at least 24 hours before the appointment. If you have had a recent chimney fire or suspect one, say so when booking, that changes what the visit is and how urgently it should happen.
If you are not sure what to book
Book an inspection and let the findings decide the rest. The symptom and the cause are often different parts of the chimney: a ceiling stain is usually flashing, rust streaks down the siding are the chase cover, and smoke coming into the room is usually a draft problem rather than a dirty flue. Booking the wrong service is the most common way a visit gets wasted.
Rescheduling
Florida weather does interfere, nobody should be on a wet roof, and the assessment would be unreliable anyway. If a storm moves the appointment, we call to move it rather than leaving you waiting.
