Chimney Cleaning
How often should I have my chimney cleaned?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends having your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year. However, if you use your fireplace frequently (more than 50 fires per season), you may need cleaning more often. The amount of creosote buildup depends on the type of wood burned, how well it's seasoned, and burning practices.
What is creosote and why is it dangerous?
Creosote is a tar-like substance that builds up inside your chimney when wood is burned. It's highly flammable and is the leading cause of chimney fires. There are three stages of creosote: Stage 1 is soot-like and easy to remove, Stage 2 is shiny and harder, and Stage 3 is glazed and requires chemical treatment. Regular cleaning prevents dangerous buildup.
How long does a chimney cleaning take?
A standard chimney cleaning typically takes 45 minutes to 1 hour for a straightforward cleaning. If there's significant buildup, damage, or if multiple flues need cleaning, it can take 1-2 hours. Our technicians take time to do the job right while protecting your home with drop cloths and sealed vacuum equipment.
Do I need to be home during the cleaning?
While not required, we recommend being home or having someone present. This allows us to show you any issues we find, explain our findings, and answer questions. If you can't be present, we'll walk you through our findings and any recommendations by phone.
Chimney Inspection
What are the different levels of chimney inspections?
There are three levels: Level 1 is a basic visual inspection included with cleaning, checking accessible areas. Level 2 is a more thorough inspection covering the flue interior plus accessible attics and crawl spaces, and is required when selling a home, after an incident, or when changing fuel types. Level 3 involves removing parts of the chimney to access concealed areas and is used when serious hazards are suspected.
When do I need a Level 2 inspection?
A Level 2 inspection is required when: buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, after an earthquake or severe weather, when changing fuel types (e.g., wood to gas), after significant damage or malfunction, or when adding an insert or liner. Most real estate transactions require Level 2 inspections.
What can a thorough chimney inspection reveal?
A thorough visual inspection can reveal: cracked or deteriorating flue tiles, creosote buildup in hidden areas, blockages from debris or animals, gaps in mortar joints, rust or damage to metal liners, evidence of previous chimney fires, and water damage. We walk you through everything we find in plain language.
How much does an inspection cost?
Level 1 inspections are typically included with our cleaning service. Level 2 inspections cost more depending on the complexity of the system, and Level 3 inspections are priced based on the extent of work required. We always provide a free written estimate before any work begins, so the number is set up front.
Chimney Repair
What are common signs my chimney needs repair?
Warning signs include: white staining (efflorescence) on exterior bricks, cracked or missing mortar joints, damaged or missing chimney cap, rust on damper or firebox, water stains on walls or ceiling near chimney, crumbling bricks, smoke backing up into the room, visible cracks in the flue liner, and strong odors from the fireplace.
What is tuckpointing and when is it needed?
Tuckpointing is the process of removing damaged mortar from between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. It's needed when mortar is cracking, crumbling, or falling out. This is essential structural maintenance that prevents water penetration, which can cause freeze-thaw damage and eventually lead to chimney collapse if ignored.
How much does chimney repair typically cost?
Repair costs vary widely based on the issue: minor tuckpointing, crown patches, and cap installation sit at the lower end, while full crown replacements and chimney rebuilds involve far more labor and materials. We provide free written estimates so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins.
Can I DIY chimney repairs?
We strongly advise against DIY chimney repairs. Chimneys are complex systems where improper repairs can create fire hazards or carbon monoxide risks. Repairs require specialized knowledge, tools, and safety equipment. Professional repairs also come with warranties and ensure code compliance. Leave it to the experienced experts.
Chimney Caps & Liners
Why do I need a chimney cap?
A chimney cap provides multiple essential protections: keeps rain and snow out (water is a chimney's worst enemy), prevents animals and birds from nesting, stops sparks and embers from escaping (fire prevention), blocks downdrafts that can blow smoke back into your home, and keeps leaves and debris out. It's one of the most cost-effective chimney investments.
How often should a chimney liner be replaced?
Clay tile liners typically last 50+ years if maintained, but can crack from chimney fires or age. Stainless steel liners last 15-25 years or longer. Signs you need a new liner: cracked tiles, holes or gaps, previous chimney fire, a failed inspection, or switching fuel types. We recommend inspection if your liner is over 20 years old.
What type of chimney liner is best?
The best liner depends on your needs: Stainless steel is most common, lasting 15-25 years and suitable for all fuel types. Cast-in-place liners are excellent for restoring deteriorated chimneys. Aluminum liners are cost-effective for gas appliances only. We assess your chimney and recommend the best solution for your specific situation.
What materials are chimney caps made from?
Chimney caps come in several materials: Galvanized steel is economical but rusts over time. Stainless steel resists rust and lasts 20+ years. Copper is premium, develops a beautiful patina, and lasts a lifetime. Aluminum is lightweight and rust-resistant but can dent. We typically recommend stainless steel for the best value.
Safety & Maintenance
What are the signs of a chimney fire?
Chimney fire signs include: loud cracking or popping sounds, dense smoke from the chimney, intense hot smell, flames or sparks coming from the top, and rumbling sounds like a freight train. If you suspect a chimney fire, get everyone out, call 911, and don't use the fireplace until inspected. Even "quiet" chimney fires cause serious damage.
Why is my fireplace smoking into the room?
Common causes include: dirty chimney (restricts airflow), damper not fully open, flue too cold (needs priming), chimney too short, blockage from debris or animals, negative pressure in home (too airtight), or incorrect firebox dimensions. Our technicians can diagnose and resolve smoky fireplace issues.
Is it safe to use my fireplace during a power outage?
Yes, wood-burning fireplaces can provide heat during power outages, but follow these guidelines: ensure the damper is open, use seasoned hardwood, never leave unattended, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, maintain working smoke and CO detectors (battery-powered), and ensure adequate ventilation. Gas fireplaces with electronic ignition won't work without power.
How can I prevent carbon monoxide issues?
To prevent CO poisoning: have your chimney inspected annually, ensure proper ventilation when using the fireplace, install CO detectors on every level, never close the damper with embers still burning, never burn garbage or treated wood, and address any draft issues promptly. A well-maintained chimney is your best protection.
