Why Most Crowns Fail Prematurely

The majority of chimney crowns we see were built improperly. Common mistakes include: using mortar instead of proper crown mix (mortar cracks quickly), making the crown too thin (less than 2 inches), building flat instead of sloped (water pools on surface), no expansion joints (thermal cycling causes cracking), no overhang or drip edge (water runs down chimney sides), and no waterproofing coating.

How We Build a Crown That Lasts

Our crown rebuilds follow every best practice: Portland cement-based crown mix with proper aggregate for strength and flexibility, minimum 3-inch thickness at the thinnest point, positive slope from the flue outward on all sides, 2-inch overhang with a shaped drip edge that directs water away from masonry, expansion joints (bond-break membrane) where the crown meets the flue liner, and flexible crown coat applied after curing for waterproof protection.

Crown Coat Protection

After the rebuilt crown has fully cured, we apply a flexible, waterproof crown coat that bridges hairline cracks and provides an additional moisture barrier. This elastomeric coating expands and contracts with temperature changes, maintaining a waterproof seal year-round. Crown coat extends the life of even a well-built crown significantly.
